Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali will miss the rest of the Premier League season due to a ten-month ban, according to 90min.
The 23-year-old has been implicated in an unlawful betting scandal that has already resulted in a seven-month punishment for Juventus player Nicolo Fagiolo.
Tonali acknowledged to his role in the scam last week, including betting on football matches involving his old team AC Milan, and his suspension is expected to be announced soon.
Tonali’s legal team has been in discussions with Italian football officials and Turin prosecutors over the midfielder’s penalty. As a result, the parties have achieved an agreement.
An statement is expected soon, however sources have told 90min that Tonali will be banned from playing for 10 months, allowing him to continue his career ahead of next season’s Premier League campaign. It is expected that he will continue to train with Newcastle but will also seek therapy for a gambling addiction, which his agent claims the player has.
Tonali is eligible to play for Newcastle in Wednesday’s Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund, and this will be his final game before serving his lengthy suspension.
