Newcastle manager Eddie Howe is expected to make two significant additions to his squad during the January transfer window.

Newcastle United have been encouraged to make their greatest transfer statement yet in January by raiding Arsenal and Manchester City. John Barnes says that he would want to see Emile Smith Rowe and Kalvin Phillips move to St James’ Park during the winter transfer window.

Newcastle is said to be interested in Smith Rowe and Phillips. Both players have struggled for playing time at their respective teams.

Arsenal: 3 ways England could line up with Emile Smith Rowe

Smith Rowe hasn’t started a Premier League match for Arsenal since May 2022, and Phillips has only started twice in the top level since signing from Leeds 18 months ago. Newcastle are expected to look for a central midfielder in the wake of Sandro Tonali’s looming suspension.

Meanwhile, Smith Rowe would add depth to the attack ahead of what Eddie Howe will be hoping is a run to the Champions League knockout stages. Barnes believes both players would be terrific additions to Howe’s team.

“Phillips and Smith Rowe are young and English,” he told mybettingsites.co.uk. I enjoy it when young English players join clubs with lofty goals.

“They’re both excellent players.” Obviously, Phillips’ time at Manchester City has not gone well, but it doesn’t imply he isn’t a talented player; otherwise, Man City would not have signed him.

“As to whether he feels he wants to fight for his place at Man City, but of course, both of them, as was Harvey Barnes, would be very good acquisitions for Newcastle.” I believe both of them would be terrific additions to Newcastle.”

Barnes, a former winger, has also weighed in on Anthony Gordon’s start to the season. Gordon has three Premier League goals and two assists, but Barnes believes the ex-Everton player has more to offer.

“Anthony Gordon needs to keep working hard,” he continued. He arrived in Newcastle with a strong reputation.

“That’s not to say he’ll be playing for them every week, because they have so many good players.” He simply needs to keep his head down, work hard, learn and grow, and be consistent.

“Newcastle must also be consistent, not getting carried away by good performances and then failing to perform well the following week.” So I’m not passing judgment on Newcastle or Anthony Gordon based on the last one or two games.

“Because there have been games where he hasn’t performed particularly well, and I’m not judging him on those either.” Newcastle and Gordon must grow gradually.”
