Tony Mowbray of Sunderland provides an update on midfielder injuries.
Tony Mowbray has provided a timetable for the 22-year-old midfielder’s return.
Tony Mowbray has updated the status of Jay Matete’s injury ahead of Sunderland’s return to Championship action.
Prior to the October international break, the Black Cats were humiliated 4-0 at home by rival Middlesbrough.
This season, Mowbray’s squad hopes to compete for promotion to the Premier League, but injuries could play a significant factor in establishing their top six credentials.
Matete has been out since the start of the season due to a fitness issue he developed during pre-season.
The 22-year-old returned from a loan spell with Plymouth Argyle in the summer, but has struggled to establish himself in the first team owing to a knee injury that necessitated surgery.
What is the most recent Jay Matete injury information?
Mowbray has announced that the midfielder is back in training with the first team squad at Sunderland.
Matete’s veteran coach believes it will just take a few weeks for him to regain full fitness.
“He’s been on the grass, running around some poles and jumping over some poles,” Mowbray explained to Chronicle Live.
“That makes me think he’s getting closer. So, sure, I’d say he’ll be back in action somewhere in November.”
Matete joined Sunderland from Fleetwood Town in the January 2022 transfer window, assisting the club’s promotion from League One under Alex Neil.
However, a lack of game time in the Championship forced him to leave in January 2023, when he went on to help the Pilgrims earn promotion from the third tier.
He appeared 19 times for Steven Schumacher’s team, recording one goal and two assists.
He is yet to make an impact for Mowbray’s side this season due to an injury sustained during pre-season, but it is believed that he will play a role for the Wearside outfit.
Sunderland’s position in the Championship table is shown below.
Team | P | GD | Pts | |
1 | Leicester City | 11 | 17 | 30 |
2 | Ipswich Town | 11 | 12 | 28 |
3 | Preston North End | 11 | -2 | 20 |
4 | Sunderland | 11 | 8 | 19 |
5 | Leeds United | 11 | 6 | 19 |
6 | Birmingham City | 11 | 4 | 18 |
7 | Norwich City | 11 | 2 | 17 |
8 | Cardiff City | 11 | 2 | 17 |
Sunderland are now fourth in the Championship table, while Mowbray’s team is looking for a sixth-place finish.
Following their promotion from League One, the Black Cats finished in sixth position the previous season.
Mowbray has received a lot of appreciation for his work over the last 13 months.
Sunderland’s primary goal this season is to return to the Premier League, but they will face great competition from a number of prominent clubs.
Leicester City and Ipswich Town have already created a big lead over the rest of the table chasers.
Sunderland’s next match is this afternoon at 3 p.m. against Stoke City.
Is Jay Matete’s future with Sunderland?
Matete impressed in League One last season and might be a valuable asset to Mowbray’s squad.
While he is unlikely to be a regular starter right away, he does provide a rotational option.
With injury problems wrecking havoc on Championship sides, having extra cover won’t be a bad thing for Sunderland.
Matete’s injury came at an inopportune time, but this return could provide an opportunity for the 22-year-old to demonstrate his worth to Sunderland.
