Tonali will work without pay at Newcastle during the ban, according to Gazzetta

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport on Saturday morning, Sandro Tonali would be forced to work without pay during his imminent ban due to his alleged involvement in illicit gambling.

Tonali may also have to practice alone for the period of his impending suspension, according to the pink tabloid.

Tonali is likely to be available for Newcastle’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace at St James’ Park on Saturday afternoon, although this will be his final game for the Magpies this season.

His legal counsel are anticipated to return to Turin early next week to meet with the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, where they will likely discuss and agree on a prospective plea deal.

According to La Gazzetta, an agreement may have already been reached informally during their discussions last week.

Tonali’s case is distinct from that of Juventus player Nicolo Fagioli, who was sentenced to seven months in prison last week for his role in the betting scandal. According to a story published on Saturday, Juventus did not withhold their players’ salaries.

Newcastle, meanwhile, is not expected to pay Tonali during his suspension. Tonali is thought to have agreed to an annual wage package of €8 million plus bonuses when he signed from Milan during the summer transfer window.

The most recent example of a Premier League betting-related punishment is Brentford and England striker Ivan Toney, who was given a 15-month suspension that was ultimately reduced to eight months at the end of the 2022-23 season.

Toney was unable to practice with the rest of the Brentford squad for the first four months of his sentence, and La Gazzetta says Tonali could face the same punishment.
