Two candidates are in the running for the England post, with Newcastle’s Eddie Howe stating his preference.

Eddie Howe has done wonders for Newcastle United in a relatively short period of time, and the Toon Army would have been ecstatic if the former Bournemouth man opted to put his hat in the ring for England manager when Gareth Southgate steps down.

That may happen as soon as the conclusion of Euro 2024, unless the Three Lions win their first major title since the 1966 World Cup, in which case Southgate will have a much more difficult time walking away.

According to The Telegraph (subscription required), Howe is not going anywhere, which is good news for Magpies fans.

By basically excluding oneself from In that specific campaign, there are just two notable contenders.

Steve Cooper, the 43-year-old manager of Nottingham Forest, worked successfully at various England junior levels between 2014 and 2019, before taking up his first professional managing role at Swansea – the prelude to his appointment at Forest.

Graham Potter, an ex-Chelsea player, is the other contender named by The Telegraph.

Because he hasn’t taken on any new responsibilities since being fired by the Blues earlier this season, any approach from the FA could be dealt with quickly one way or the other.

That would almost certainly be preferred by all parties, as Southgate would not want anything to detract from the next step of England’s endless quest on the field.
