Sandro Tonali, a Newcastle United midfielder, is ‘ready to face Crystal Palace despite a betting issue.’
Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is expected to be ready for Saturday’s Premier League match against Crystal Palace as the Italian Football Federation investigates his unlawful betting behavior.
On Wednesday, the Magpies issued a statement confirming that the 23-year-old is the target of an Italian football betting investigation and that he is “fully cooperating with the investigation.”
Tonali was forced to leave Italy’s national team earlier this month and was questioned by police before returning to Newcastle on Monday.
On Tuesday afternoon, the midfielder returned to Italy to attend a hearing at the prosecutor’s office at the Court of Turin.
Tonali is believed to have acknowledged to betting on football games, both played and not played, for his previous club AC Milan to win during his time at the Serie A side.
Newcastle’s No.8, who is suffering a gambling addiction, is facing a seven-month to three-year suspension from international football, according to his agent Giuseppe Riso.
Following a court hearing in Turin, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) stated on Tuesday that Juventus midfielder Nicolo Fagioli had been granted a seven-month ban from football as well as a €12,500 fine for unlawful gambling activities.
Tonali might learn the length of his expected exile from football as early as next week, according to the Daily Mail.
The midfielder, who has returned to England and trained with his Newcastle teammates, is thus available for selection for this weekend’s Premier League home game against Crystal Palace, according to the source.
Tonali’s inclusion in the matchday squad has yet to be determined by manager Eddie Howe, who is due to provide an update on the issue at a press conference on Friday.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan in the summer for a reputed £55 million and has since made 10 first-team appearances across all competitions, scoring on his Premier League debut against Aston Villa in August.
Aston Villa midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, on loan from Galatasaray, is being investigated for alleged unlawful betting, as is Tonali, and is in contention to play for Unai Emery’s side against West Ham United on Sunday.
If Tonali is banned from football for an extended period of time, Newcastle will reportedly aim to recruit a replacement midfielder in January, with Al-Hilal’s Ruben Neves, Manchester United’s Scott McTominay, and Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips among their priorities.
