Newcastle has ‘eyed’ a £42 million ex-Leeds United star. United has been told to join West Ham or Everton.

Transfers at Newcastle United: One Magpies target has been encouraged to join their Premier League rivals in January.

When the winter transfer window opens, Newcastle United has been extensively linked with signing Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. Phillips has battled for playing time at the Etihad Stadium and has yet to start a Premier League game this season, with his solitary start for the club coming in the Carabao Cup against Newcastle last month.

Phillips’ lack of game time has fueled rumors that he could be on the move when the January transfer market opens, with the Magpies, West Ham United, and Everton all connected with a bid for the former Leeds United man. A likely suspension for Sandro Tonali could force Newcastle to sign a midfielder in the new year, but Gabby Agbonlahor believes Phillips should seek elsewhere.

“He doesn’t have a future at Man City, that’s for sure,” the former Aston Villa striker told Football Insider. With Rodri suspended, Pep Guardiola didn’t even start him against Arsenal.

“He’ll be asking himself, ‘Why did you buy me if I’m not playing these games?'” If he wasn’t confident about his future before the game, he certainly is now.

“If I were him, I’d like to play football.” He’s a young man with many years ahead of him.

“Join Everton or West Ham and just play football, because otherwise you are going to affect your England chances.”

Phillips, who turns 28 in December, played 70 minutes of England’s Euro 2024 qualifier against Italy on Tuesday night and will look to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans when City host Brighton on Saturday.
