Sandro Tonali is available for Newcastle due to a betting investigation, according to sources.

The 23-year-old AC Milan summer signing was pulled from Italy’s team for Euro 2024 qualifying matches against Malta and England last Thursday after the Italian Football Federation was informed by police of his involvement in a betting probe. Aston Villa midfielder Nicol Zaniolo, who is on loan at Galatasaray this season, was also left out of the squad.

According to unconfirmed reports in Italy, Tonali faces a lengthy suspension from sports after confessing to betting on AC Milan games while a player at the club.

Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, stated on Tuesday that the player is “fighting against a gambling addiction” and is “shocked, shaken, and sad” about his position.

However, with Newcastle still awaiting complete facts of the Tonali inquiry, the club issued a statement on Wednesday to address the rumors around the player.

“Newcastle United can confirm that Sandro Tonali is being investigated by the Italian Prosecutor’s Office and the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) in relation to illegal betting activity,” the statement said.

“Sandro is fully cooperating with all relevant authorities and is fully engaged in the investigation.” He and his family will continue to get full support from the club.
