Newcastle United are interested in signing Leeds United midfielder Finlay Gorman, although the Yorkshire Evening Post reports that Manchester City are the frontrunners.
The local news agency reports on their official website (17 October) that Manchester City have already made contact to sign the 15-year-old winger, but the Magpies are also interested.
However, the 2022/23 treble winners think they are in the lead to bring him in, with a six-figure compensation money likely if he leaves Elland Road.
“Newcastle United are also among those hopeful of luring the teenager away from Thorp Arch, as the north east club continue their youth-focused recruitment drive,” they said in a statement.
“However, Man City consider themselves front-runners in their pursuit of the teen.”
It appears that there will be even more interest from super-rich clubs in signing young Gorman in the coming weeks and months, and Leeds will have a very difficult time keeping him.
Gorman is an extraordinarily gifted young player who made his Under-18s debut at the age of 14 and also played for England’s Under-16s at the same age.
But he has now become a super target for the biggest clubs in the country, which will automatically put more eyes on him from other clubs. He’d no doubt earn more money there and obviously have the benefit of working with top coaches as well, but whether his development would stagnate with less regular game time remains to be seen.
It will be intriguing to see, but excitement is building, and Leeds must brace itself for the worst.
