Tony Mowbray, former Middlesbrough and Sunderland manager, praised Boro following their 4-0 victory.

Tony Mowbray was enraged by the red card that cost his Sunderland side against Middlesbrough, but he still had plenty of praise for Michael Carrick’s team.

After an exciting and equal first half, the game appeared to be perfectly set as halftime neared. But it was the dismissal of Dan Neil in first-half stoppage time for a second yellow card for dissent that truly launched Boro on their way to an overwhelming victory and surprised Mowbray.

Boro won 4-0 at the Stadium of Light, capitalizing on their man advantage in the second half. Boro earned their largest win ever on Wearside, with goals from Sam Greenwood, Matt Crooks, Isaiah Jones, and Marcus Forss, to continue their outstanding form, which now extends to four straight league wins.

After the game, Boro veteran Tony Mowbray stated, “The first half was a really good game, we’ve had I think just about the better moments.” We were self-assured. The second half showed that they are a good squad, as I had predicted. They’re a good ball-control club, better than many of the opponents we’ve seen this season.

“Middlesbrough are a good team, and it was a good game with chances for both teams.” I’ve always maintained they’re a good club, and they’re certainly a team I keep an eye on. It’s difficult to compete against a decent football club when you’re down a man. In that circumstance, they make the correct pass.

“If we ever go down to ten men again, it’ll be a huge learning curve and a bit of an education for us.” Best wishes to them. They had that run at the start of the season, and while I wasn’t feeling sorry for them, you could tell they were integrating new players into their game.

“We knew how they’d play: bring in their wide-left player for an extra body, then push the left-back on.” We anticipated that they would create opportunities, and we also created opportunities. It was all set up to be a fun game. We really need to toss this one in the trash and move on.”
