West Ham United’s star Vladimir Coufal recounts his injury during a specialist appointment.
West Ham defender Vladimir Coufal said that he skipped the Czech Republic’s match against Hungary during the international break in September to prevent worsening a back issue.

The Czech international said that he had seen a back injury specialist, who assessed that there was no need for injections or surgery but provided him advice on how to speed up his recuperation, which he currently claims is doing well.

Coufal has continued to play for the Hammers during this time, with concerns about his injuries plainly not preventing him from participating, but his absence from internationals has highlighted the need to reduce his exertion.

On 3 October, Coufal told Czech news site Pardubicky Denik, “It [his absence from international duty] was more for preventive reasons.” I begged West Ham for it and contacted members of the national squad.

“I, too, was in favor of doing it this way. I didn’t need to risk exacerbating my ailment by playing in the friendly versus Hungary. As a result, immediately following Albania, I flew to an appointment with a spine and back doctor who has worked on celebrities such as golfer Tiger Woods.

“He reasoned that no injections or the like were required at this time.” He advised me on what to do. I already felt better at the national team meeting since the physiotherapists were so attentive to my needs.

Preventative measures

Both the club and the athlete must be aware of when preventive steps are required to avoid injury difficulties, with back ailments being particularly tough to manage.

Coufal has been cleared to continue at the London Stadium after a specialist determined there was no cause for alarm, and he maintains his rehabilitation is progressing. Of course, there will be concerns about the possibility of exacerbating the situation, but if the club was truly concerned, it would not take the chance.

The defender has continued to excel for David Moyes’ side, although he was rested for the Europa League and Carabao Cup matches against Backa Topola and Lincoln City, respectively.

His three Premier League assists from seven games this season demonstrate how influential he has been, with this West Ham side on a high after outstanding performances as they try to remain competitive in every tournament this season.
