On Wednesday night, Newcastle United defeated Manchester City despite making 10 changes.
Man City’s Carabao Cup team was not at full strength, but the Newcastle team was even further from their starting lineup.
Eddie Howe gave several young people an opportunity; Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall made their debuts after moving to Tyneside over the summer. Livramento won Player Of The Match for his especially strong performance.
Lewis Miley, 17, who was making just his second senior appearance for the club, also received his first Toon start.
The adolescent performed admirably in preseason and merited a shot in the cup, but was a member of a Newcastle squad that battled in the first half.
Man City totally dominated possession, preventing the Magpies from getting near.
At halftime, Howe made adjustments, one of which involved Miley being replaced by Bruno Guimaraes. On a windy night inside St James’ Park, the Brazilian had a significant impact and helped Newcastle surge to victory.
Although the outcome was ideal, Miley’s performance was not. His manager, though, has been glowing since he made his first senior start.
‘Outstanding’ Lewis Miley is trusted by Eddie Howe.
Howe gave an interview to BBC Newcastle following the victory over Manchester City. Regarding Lewis Miley’s role, he was questioned.
He stated, “I think it was a challenging half for us.
But for Lewy, that will be a fantastic experience. It’s wonderful when your debut goes off without a hitch. However, occasionally you’ll have a debut that highlights the difficulties of the level you’re playing.
“it’s not a criticism of his performance, but it was the situation he found himself in tonight. And occasionally, you learn more from that than the other way around.
“He is a player of exceptional quality and considerable promise. Consequently, I had faith in him to play today. I don’t only give people chances for their own sake. He will learn from it and earn it.
Lewis Miley’s first of many starts for Newcastle United
Miley will take what she can from that experience, as Howe suggests.
Against Man City, he truly did nothing wrong. When he could get on the ball, which wasn’t often, he kept the ball well.
However, Newcastle as a whole played poorly in the first half. Neither Miley nor the £55 million man Sandro Tonali who was standing next to him had much sway.
Howe’s aptitude is demonstrated by the fact that he launched Miley. He doesn’t merely hand out opportunities, as he has stated.
Miley got his start Friday night, the first of many that he will make wearing a black and white shirt. For him and his family, it will have been a night to be proud of.
