Jack Harrison, a winger for Leeds United, made his debut for loan team Everton yesterday night as they defeated Aston Villa in the third round of the EFL Cup.
Many players on loan are trying to establish themselves at new clubs as Daniel Farke’s team prepares for the next Championship match against fellow demoted team Southampton.
Given his readiness to leave the team for another potential relegation struggle, Jack Harrison’s exit to Everton didn’t sit well with fans, and any explanation for his choice would be interesting to hear.
What did he just say?
Harrison made his Everton debut Friday night in their EFL Cup match against Aston Villa. Harrison was unfortunate not to record an assist as he frequently connected up with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, helping Everton to a 2-1 victory.
After the game, he spoke to the Liverpool Echo about his choice to join Everton, which came after a contentious incident in August involving Everton and his last night’s opponents, the Villans.
He said:
“There is a long story behind it. I think I have to sit down and explain it properly, I don’t want to say anything out of turn.
“It was a complicated situation and in the end I ended up at Everton and I was happy to go there. I saw the values of the club, it’s a fantastic club and I’m surprised that they’ve been in the situation they have over the last couple of years.”
He also admitted his surprise that the Toffees find themselves low down the table each season, given what he’s seen so far at his new club, as he continued:
“I think that with the talent they’ve got in the squad and the facilities with the staff and set-up they have as a club is very good. I’m happy to be here and hopefully I can add to an already talented team and we can build on these performances of the last two games and can create some success here at the club.”
I’m sure he’ll conveniently omit how he forced his way out of Leeds through a loan clause, but it’ll be interesting to hear what he has to say about how the move came about.
He performed well last night under Dyche, and given how the Toffees manager prefers his wide men to play, he is a strong match for the team.
However, you do have to question why he would want to play for a team that will soon be struggling financially.
